# Sales Compensation Design for Series B SaaS: Compare Incentives Before You Commit

A sales compensation plan should reward the behaviors that support growth and make payout costs predictable. This Limitless Consulting design review compares two incentive models for a Series B SaaS sales team. It examines the balance between base salary and variable pay, higher commission rates for exceeding quota, and incentives for opportunities sellers generate themselves.

## Problem

Revenue leaders need a plan that motivates sellers and keeps compensation costs understandable. The balance between base salary and variable pay, along with higher commission rates above quota, affects both seller behavior and payout costs. The plan needs to fit how the team wins business.

## Environment

This review is built around a team of seven to ten account executives, a three- to six-month sales cycle, and a sales approach focused primarily on outbound prospecting. The model assumes a $50,000 average contract value, a $750,000 annual recurring revenue (ARR) quota, and $150,000 to $180,000 in total earnings at quota.

## What We Found

A plan with more variable pay places greater emphasis on winning new business, while a higher base salary gives sellers more income stability. Incentives for opportunities sellers generate themselves can support outbound prospecting. Higher commission rates above quota and the timing of payouts also affect motivation, company cash flow, and administration.

## What We Changed

We compared two designs: 50% base salary and 50% variable pay, and 60% base salary and 40% variable pay. The review examines how each option rewards performance, supports outbound prospecting, and affects compensation costs. It also considers payout timing and the rules needed to calculate commissions consistently.

## Implementation

1. **Define the inputs:** establish role responsibilities, quota, target earnings, and expectations for generating opportunities.
2. **Compare scenarios:** model payouts below, at, and above quota to understand seller earnings and company costs.
3. **Prepare for rollout:** confirm that plan rules, payout timing, and calculators agree before communicating the final design to the sales team.

## Results

The review gives leaders two compensation designs to compare, with clear tradeoffs in seller incentives, income stability, and payout costs. It supports a plan decision before rollout. The financial inputs are modeling assumptions; post-launch quota attainment, retention, and revenue results are not included.

## Lessons

Compensation design works best when role expectations, the way the team sells, and payout rules support the same goals. Test unusual scenarios as well as expected performance, and resolve unclear rules before launch. Sellers and administrators need to understand how the plan works.
